Jan received MSc degree in Mining and Geology in 1999 from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. Then, he earned a PhD degree with a dissertation on the analysis and interpretation of the Earth’s crust deformation in the vicinity of a planned water reservoir.
Associate professor at the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology where he started his career as a research assistant. He served as a visiting professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway (2009, 2022), and at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, Canada (2012) where he conducted both theoretical and experimental research on ground movements induced by complex mining operations and integration of multisource data.
Presently conducts research on the impact of shallow mining and changing hydrogeological conditions on the stability of post-mining areas and sinkhole risk mapping, as well as the impact of underground gas storage on ground deformation and land cover change. Supervisor of the GIS student research group.
His research activities focus on:
- monitoring and predictive modeling of ground movements induced by mining and mine dewatering,
- GIS based analysis and modelling of processes in natural and anthropogenic (mining, post-mining, urban) systems,
- remote sensing observations of anthropogenic and environmental systems,
- data driven spatial statistics and machine learning in analysis and assessment of environmental and anthropogenic systems,
- analysis of model uncertainty in environmental risk assessment.
